What makes this so simple fountain pen such a bestseller for decades? Today we would like to follow the footsteps of the LAMY 2000 and try to shed some light on the subject!

36 years after the founding of LAMY in 1930, the LAMY 2000 appears in the October 1966 price list, for 42 German marks at the time, the equivalent of 21 EUR / 23 USD.

The LAMY brand, in the person of its young marketing director Dr. Manfred Lamy, set a milestone for the future at this point and has since followed the Bauhaus philosophy of "form follows function".

Reduced to the essentials with the materials polycarbonate, brushed matte stainless steel, and a platinum-plated 14-carat nib, the LAMY 2000 set new standards and continues to appeal to us today with its reduced design and functionality. Understatement: a noble writing instrument without immediately revealing itself as such remains the key to success to this day.

The materials are perfectly matched and blend together, creating a visually non-existent transition between the polycarbonate and the stainless steel. The polycarbonate sits grippily in the hand and the balance of the 26 gramm fountain pen is optimal. The fountain pen is completed by a clip-on cap with an impressively straight and angular clip. It also comes with the tried-and-tested 14-carat platinum-plated gold nib in eight nib sizes.

The 50th anniversary in 2016 marks the beginning of a total of three special editions between 2016 and 2021. The anniversary edition LAMY 2000 M black amber made of all-metal construction visits with an irradiated surface of unique structure. It receives its characteristic coloring through an elaborate galvanization process in which stainless steel and galvanic surface finishing form a permanent bond. Limited to 5,000 pieces and available as a fountain pen, rollerball and ballpoint pen, the model is unmistakably designed with the number 50 under the brand name on the cap.

In 2019, LAMY is launching the dark blue special model "100 Years Bauhaus". The special model is limited to 1,919 pieces and consecutively numbered. It was available at a price of 350 EUR (approx. 377 USD) and included a fine 240-page DIN A5 anniversary notebook made of 120g/ m2 paper. The special edition was exclusively available with an EF nib.

In 2021, another special edition in dark brown polycarbonate will follow to celebrate 55 years of LAMY design. Again, this special edition comes with a 160-page softcover notebook. Furthermore, this special edition receives the first publication "The Unknown Designer", which outlines the previously unpublished biography of designer Gerd A. Müller. LAMY limited the special edition to 3,300 pieces.

As we can see, the LAMY 2000 is not only a timeless classic, but the piston fountain pen in Bauhaus design that would shape the brand's design philosophy from then on.

Today, the LAMY 2000 is available in Makrolon and stainless steel design as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil. In addition, the Makrolon variant can be purchased as a multi-system pen. The 14 carat gold nib can be selected in the nib sizes EF, F, M, B, BB, OM, OB and OBB and thus offers a wide range for every type of writing.
